Reception's Blog - Week Beginning Monday 30th September

Date: 4th Oct 2019 @ 11:30am

It’s been a busy week here in Reception!

In Literacy this week, we have introduced the children to ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We started our sessions by looking at the story and learning about all the characters that help the old man pull out the turnip. Once we were familiar with the characters, we labelled each of them by using our existing phonics knowledge. The children were supported with the unfamiliar sounds and we used our phonics mats to help with formation. The children are getting to grips with hearing initial sounds and some children were even able to segment whole words – wow! We then were asked to sequence the story by cutting out pictures and putting them in order.

In maths, we have been learning all about the number 4. We’ve looked at the rhyme to help us with formation, gathered 4 objects at a time and selected 4 stickers to put in our books. To help support at home, we say, “draw a line, across once more, down again makes number 4”. Already we’ve seen that children are going home and practising their formation which is fantastic! We have also looked at patterns and sequencing. The children were given the start of a repetitive pattern and they had to select the appropriate colours to finish the sequence.

The children are becoming more familiar with phonics and are really taking to the structure of the lesson. Each day we revisit the previous sounds and add a new one. This week we have looked at i, p and n. Please support your child at home by practising these sounds using the sound cards placed in their folders.

Homework this week is a continuation from last week. We really want the children to develop their fine motor skills and so we’ve been using this as a focus in our choosing time. By also supporting at home, the children will be able to develop their pencil grip and formation when writing. Some things we encourage are threading, playdoh, peg boards and cutting.

It’s been a very busy week with a lot going on in the classroom as well as around school. We hope you all have a restful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday.
