Year 1 class blog w/b 8.1.18

Date: 14th Jan 2018 @ 2:10pm

Happy new year everyone! We have had a super first week back in year 1! This week in phonics we have focussed on the ure sound. Thank you for your help with some rather tricky spellings this week! Please continue to record any reading in your child’s planner.

In English, a mysterious Arctic explorer arrived in our classroom, alongside some unusual footprints that looked like they had been created by a polar bear! We ‘hot seated’ the explorer to find out who he was and why he was in our classroom. It turned out he was making a TV show about polar animals and was tracking down a rather cheeky polar bear to film for his movie. We have been looking at a new story map for the David Walliam’s story ‘The Bear who went Boo!’ As well as learning the map, creating freeze frames in drama and exploring the text for adjectives, we also wrote a sorry letter from the bear to one of the characters in the story.

In maths this week we have focused on number bonds to 20 and looked at part- part whole models when problem solving. In science we looked at everyday materials and sorted them into different categories. In PE we started gymnastics and started to create different shapes.

In topic we introduced the topic of ‘Out of this World’ by asking the question ‘can a polar bear eat a penguin?’ We discovered that polar bears are from the Arctic and Penguins are from the Antarctic so it wouldn’t be possible! We then learned some more about the Antarctic and started to create a leaflet about it. Mrs Taylor also enjoyed teaching some Arctic yoga to the children in year 1 and reception.

As you will (hopefully) have seen I sent home some phonics homework, which I will try to send weekly for you to practise. This doesn’t need to be returned but can be sent back in if you wish. Please let me know if you have any questions or queries.
