Year 1 WC 6th May 2019

Date: 10th May 2019 @ 9:39pm

In English this week the children have been writing their own pirate stories and what an imaginative bunch they are! I've really enjoyed reading their pirate tales. We have been focusing on using imaginative language to make our stories exciting to read, as well as making sure we are using full stops and capital letters in the correct places.

In maths we have started to look at division. In year 1 this means understanding how to share into equal parts. Yesterday we did this using counters and putting them into equal groups. Next we moved on to pictorial representations, circling equal groups of objects. Then today we used a number line to show this as repeated subtraction. To help at home, please practise counting both forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10s. Find opportunities to share objects (e.g. grapes, sweets, lego pieces, etc) into equal groups. So we would say, 'I have 20 apples and I want to put them into groups of 5, how many groups can I make?' This last part has been tricky as children want to count the total apples rather than the groups.

In RE we have been looking at the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector who changed his behaviour when Jesus gave him a chance. We used hotseating to explore how he might have felt at different parts of the story. Then we thought about how we would ask Jesus to help us to change for the better.

Please practise the real and alien words I have sent home for homework. Children are encouraged to write sound buttons to help with segmenting. Just a reminder that regular reading at home really does make a difference to your child's reading progress. They also receive 2 Dojo points for each time this is recorded in their planner.

I hope you have a lovely weekend.
