Year 5 w/b 7th September

Date: 11th Sep 2020 @ 3:37pm

It has been a fantastic week in Y5.

We started our new topic on slavery. This began with us thinking about all the jobs we have to do at home and who does what. The children took on family roles of parents and children and stuck labels onto each other showing who did what at home. They decided that it didn't look very fair, but weren't too keen to take on more responsibilities themselves! We then thought about the reasons you might complete work for someone else, such as to help people if they are poorly or as paid employment, before talking about the work completed by enslaved people throughout history.

Children also had a lot of fun this week investigating gravity by dropping objects into flour to make craters. I have to say they all looked a lot cleaner this morning!

In English we have been looking at the book 'The Errand' (a change from our topic web) and completed a drama activity as the whispering woods. Mrs McLean tried to cross the woodland and was very scared. We used this work to help write expanded noun phrases and extend our sentences using conjunctions in class.

In maths we have been revising place value and working on rounding numbers and I am so pleased with the children's focus and determination. They have been particulalry determined to crack the code for the safe using the mathematical clues. We haven't quite managed it, but are getting close and I have a feeling they will open it to claim their prize this week.

Next week we have our first outdoor learning session (on Monday) and a visit to church (on Thursday) to look forward to.

Thanks again for following out school procedures to keep everyone safe. We know it has taken some getting used to but it has been lovely to have the children back and they all seem happy to be back amongst their friends.

Please also remember to read the newsletter as it does contain updated information on our procedures.
