The Kabin
Welcome to The Kabin: A Space for Growth, Connection, and Belonging
At our school, we believe that every child deserves an environment that reflects their unique journey. The Kabin, situated at the front of our school building, is more than just an additional classroom; it is a dedicated sanctuary designed to bridge the gap between potential and achievement.
By prioritising a trauma-informed approach, The Kabin serves as a "safe haven" where emotional security is the foundation for all learning. We recognise that for a child to engage academically, they must first feel regulated, seen, and supported.
Meeting Children Where They Are
The philosophy of The Kabin is rooted in the concept of meeting the child where they are. Rather than expecting every student to fit into a rigid traditional mould, we adapt our environment and pace to suit their specific requirements. This flexible use of space allows us to provide a truly personalised curriculum that honours individual starting points and reduces the cognitive load often found in busier settings.
-
Morning Sessions: The focus is on core academic confidence. In a calm, specialised environment, children access targeted teaching in reading, writing, spelling, and maths, ensuring they make robust progress at a rhythm that works for them.
-
Afternoon Nurture: The space transforms into a dedicated nurture hub. Here, the curriculum is bespoke—tailored specifically to Educational Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) or ‘At the Heart’ documents. We prioritise essential subjects like Science and Computing while weaving in the vital "hidden curriculum" of social and emotional development.
A Holistic Approach to Specialist Support
The Kabin integrates sensory-based needs with practical life transitions, ensuring that learning is both functional and therapeutic.
| Feature | Purpose & Impact |
| Zones of Regulation | Empowering children to identify, understand, and manage their emotional states in a supportive setting. |
| Life Skills Curriculum | Fostering independence through practical tasks: managing money, telling the time, and basic meal preparation. |
| Social & Language Links | Using structured games and the Chatty Toolbox intervention to build communication and collaborative skills. |
| Sensory Integration | Utilising the space to meet sensory-seeking or sensory-avoidant needs, reducing anxiety and increasing focus. |
Inclusion in Action
Inclusion at our school does not mean "everyone doing the same thing"; it means everyone getting what they need to succeed. Whether it is developing the organisational skills to pack a school bag or mastering a complex maths concept, The Kabin ensures that no child is left behind.
By removing barriers to learning and focusing on the whole child, we are creating a pathway for every child to thrive within our mainstream community and beyond.
