Year 1 w/b 11th March 2024

Date: 15th Mar 2024 @ 8:00am

In English this week we have introduced our information text model text based on the story ‘There’s a Tiger in the Garden’. We have learnt the text using a text map and actions. We have analysed the text and looked at the language features used. This will all help us when we come to write our own information texts about other wild animals next week.

In Phonics we focused on au (Paul the astronaut) and ue (to the rescue!).  Homework this week will reflect this. Our helping at home videos continue to focus on reading longer words, this week with the ay/ai/a-e sound. These videos have been sent as a Dojo message.

We have now completed our unit on length and height. We enjoyed using rulers to practice measuring different classroom objects in centimetres. Towards the end of the week, we began to explore our new unit: mass and capacity. We have looked at balance scales and what happens when we put heavy and light objects at each end. We have also used balance scales to measure the mass of classroom objects in multilink cubes.

In collective worship we considered the journeys made in the Bible from the Old and New Testament we thought about our journeys in life. We explored how we have improved in maths, rugby, reading and grown friendships. We all need to go on a journey to improve and having the support of our friends and family on this journey is wonderful.

In History we have started to look at homes from the past. First, we went on a quick walk outside of school, noticing and talking about the different styles of houses and what they were made from. We looked at homes from the Medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian times. We particularly liked the black and white stripes on the Tudor buildings. Next week we will be looking at Victorian homes in more detail.

Next week in school we shall be assessing children’s progress in maths and reading to see where the children are up to with their learning and what we need to focus on next.

During Art and design we explored the paintings and inspiration of Henri Rousseau. Although he never actually visited a jungle, he would take his easel and paints to large plant filled glasshouses and imagine wildlife exploring the undergrowth. One of his most famous paintings was ‘Surprise’ and this featured a predatory tiger roaming between the tress, plants, and bushes. Inspired by this painting we worked cooperatively to create paintings of large jungles mixing a range of green shades.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,
