Year 1 w/b 19th June 2023

Date: 22nd Jun 2023 @ 5:54pm

We have had a fabulous Sports week in school. Good weather (with the exception of Tuesday !!!!) has enabled us to practise and learn new sports at each playtime and some lunchtime. These have included, basketball, cricket, dodgeball and athletic skills. Wednesday was our EYFS and Key Stage One sports morning where children worked cooperatively in mixed age groups to play rounders, French cricket, netball and a range of athletic sports involving hurdles, javelins and speed bouncing. Finally, today, we have all had the opportunity to swim in our special pool and the children were so excited to share with us their confidence and joy in the water during this fun session.

In English, we have planned and written our innovated responses to Tom from the Night Pirates. We have learned how to structure a letter and about the features of a letter. It has been great to observe how confident the children have become spelling multi syllabic words using their knowledge of phonics, punctuating sentences correctly and checking their writing by reading it back to themselves and a partner. Next week we plan to write letters to Miss Roxborough introducing ourselves and telling her the sort of things we are looking forward to in Year two.

In Maths we started of the week by comparing numbers using the vocabulary greater than and less than, we used the symbols < and > to record number sentences to how this. We then moved on to looking at money. First we looked at different coins and what they are worth and finally we looked at notes and how much each of them is worth. We handled lots of coins and thought about how we can distinguish between them.

RE has involved us recapping 5 things in 5 minutes from the previous week before we acted out the scenes from Joseph’s early life in Canaan- from when he was given the special coat from his Father, to his dreams about his brothers and his journey to Egypt as a slave. Next, we heard about Joseph’s life in Egypt and its ups and downs in Potiphar’s house, from one moment being promoted in the household, to the next being imprisoned because of lies told about him. But whilst in prison Joseph interprets fellow prisoners’ dreams with the help of God looking after him. You will see some great photos attached and evidence of super acting skills!

My Happy Mind was all about relationships and in particular fabulous friendships, focusing on the features of a great friend. We recognised qualities of great friends, such as being a good listener, being caring, sharing, sticking up for us when we need it and making us feel special. We drew pictures of the people in our own lives that we consider to be fabulous friends and explained why we chose them.

In Science this week we continued our learning about plants thinking about seed, flowers and plants. We have looked at different fruits and vegetables thinking about how they have grown and identified the seeds in them.

We are very excited to be going on our trip to The Catalyst Museum on Tuesday. Please remember to send your child with a packed lunch if you have not pre-ordered one from school. Children need to be dressed in their uniform and ready for a fun packed day of science learning!

Another great week in Year One, well done all!
