Year 1 w/b 3rd July 2023

Date: 7th Jul 2023 @ 4:13pm

Firstly, thank you for attending Parents Consultations last week, it was a real pleasure to share all of the fantastic achievements your wonderful children have made throughout this year.

Poetry has been our focus in English this week. Year One know that poems are a collection of descriptions using imaginative words and phrases that sound great when read aloud. Our week started by revealing what was in our treasure chest where we thought about not just physical treasure but other things that are important to us. Next, we listened to poetry being read aloud and performed some of our own. We looked specifically at the poem ‘Pirate Pete’ and created our own stanza that we could add to the poem. We finished the week looking at dictionaries and thinking about how we can use our knowledge of alphabetical order to find words quickly.

In phonics, we focused on plurals thinking about which letters we need to add to a root word to make it a plural for example cow to cows, dress to dresses. We then moved on to looking at the spellings of each of the days of the week.

In Maths we have begun our unit on ‘Time’. The children started by sequencing events which they do daily to help them order things chronologically. We then looked at days of the week and which order they came in. Moving on we thought about how we can use a calendar to help us organise events by the month they take place. We have learnt songs to help us order both the days of the week and months of the year. We ended the week beginning to look at an analogue clock, looking at which is the hour hand and which is the minute hand and also how to tell the time with o’clock times.

On Thursday we were delighted to be invited to watch the dress rehearsal of the Year 6 performance of Grease. The children put on a great performance and we thoroughly enjoyed being in the audience.

We took the opportunity of the lovely weather today to have picnic lunch outside on the field, the children thoroughly enjoyed having lunch with their friends. We then spent part of the afternoon playing some games on the field with the parachute.

A few notices for next week:

-On Monday we are very excited to be spending some time in the Year 2 classroom and meeting Miss Roxburgh.

-On Friday we will be celebrating Pirate Day. Please come dressed as pirates for a day full of art and lots of pirate fun

-On Friday we will also be saying “Good Bye” to Miss Sowter. It has been a pleasure to have her in our class to work alongside us and we want to say 'Thank you' for all her hard work and dedication over this academic year. We wish her the very best of luck as she moves on with her teaching career.

Another wonderful week in Year 1!
