Year 2 w/b 11th March

Date: 15th Mar 2024 @ 4:10pm

We have had another great week of learning in Year Two.

In English this week we have been planning our own finding narratives after reading ‘The Bog Baby’. To demonstrate our skills of innovation, we have planned stories with our own: magical creature, characters, exciting setting, problem and solution. Towards the end of our week, we began to write our finding narratives. These stories look like they are going to be wonderful and I am really looking forward to reading them all once they are finished.

Our first spelling rule this week was dropping the ‘e’ before adding the suffix ‘ing’, this rule applies for words such as baking, chuckling and rattling. Our second spelling rule this week was adding the suffixes ‘er’ or ‘est’, this rule applies for words such as luckier, luckiest, finer and finest.

In PE this week, we learnt how to catch a ball and confidently use this in a game situation. First, we played a DVD game where we had to pause, fast forward, rewind or move in slow motion. We used underarm and overarm techniques from our previous lesson and applied them. We stood a metre apart from our partner to catch the ball and we ensured we moved our body in line with the ball, using the ball of our foot and going on our toes. We made this more difficult by using a smaller ball and standing further away. Finally, we enjoyed playing a game of dodgeball and discussed the main points involved in throwing a ball.

In maths this week, we have been finishing our unit ‘Length and height’. We have been learning how to order sets of lengths measured in centimetres or metres and use a range of methods to solve word problems involving length and height. On Thursday, we started our new unit ‘Mass, capacity and temperature’. We have been learning how to use balance scales to compare the mass of two or more objects, and use chains of reasoning to order the mass of more than two objects. On Friday, we explored the use of standard units of mass (grams) and looked at how we can measure these using both balance scales and weighing scales.

In art this week, Miss Latham showed us how to lighten colours by adding white paint, she explained that this is called 'tint'. A tint is a lighter variation of a colour. Tints are created by adding white to colours. For example, pink is a tint of red. We started by painting a section of our paper with the base colour then we kept adding white to create lighter shades. Miss Latham explained that we could add a little bit of water to smooth the sharp lines, just like Hannah Dunnett. We really enjoyed our first art lesson with Miss Latham!

In history, we used our prior learning to help us to deepen our understanding of the Victorians and Queen Victoria. It was particularly interesting to find out how she used and changed Buckingham Palace. We were also able to draw lots of parallels between the improvements that Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth I made.

We are very sad to be saying goodbye to Miss Latham next Friday who has been with us in Year Two since January. We would like to thank her for her commitment, dedication and enthusiasm teaching in Year Two and she will be missed by us all. We wish Miss Latham the best of luck for the future.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
