Year 2 w/b 11th September

Date: 15th Sep 2023 @ 5:23pm

What an enjoyable week it has been in Year Two! This week we were introduced to our model text and text map as we discovered that we would be writing our own circular narratives. Using synonyms to help clarify our understanding of new vocabulary, we explored the following words and phrases from the model text: emerald, squint, snaked, edge, prized possession, towards the horizon, overlooked, explore, bustling city, peered, cruise, seemed familiar. Towards the end of our week, we were introduced to our text map and began learning some actions. This helped us with some further vocabulary work as we discussed and agreed actions to best represent: cruised, squinted, overlooked, snaked and peered.

In science, children have participated in great discussion surrounding what things make us happy compared to what things we need to survive. We decided that sometimes these can be quite different! After this, we discussed what five things an animal needs to survive. On Wednesday afternoon we had our first Geography lesson where we revisited compass directions whilst looking at different types of maps. We were very excited to create our very own treasure map and we made sure to use directional language to help our partner find the treasure. It was wonderful to see children applying these important skills in Forest School on Thursday afternoon.

This week we started our first unit 'The Bible' in RE. Firstly, we talked about our favourite books and thought about what was so special about them and where we keep them. It was wonderful to see such a range of books, one of them being a Bible! We then discussed why Bibles are so special and why they are believed to be holy. After this, we looked a collection of Bibles – old, new, picture Bibles, different sizes and languages and agreed that they are all special, even though they look different.

In PE, we enjoyed our very first gymnastics lesson. After a warm up and a quick game of 'Stuck in the mud', we recapped shapes from Year 1. These included: pike, star, squat, straddle, tuck, arch, dish and straight. We then rotated around each station, moving along the apparatus in the shapes. Finally, we performed our short sequences in front of the class.

In PSHE, we explored what is meant by ‘diversity’. We then read the book 'The Great Big Book of Families' and discussed different examples of diversity being shown in the book e.g. some small families live in big houses and some big families live in small houses. After this, we created a list of the many ways the UK is so great at being diverse, for example we have different religions, different families and different ways to celebrate. Finally, we discussed what it would be like if everybody was the same and concluded that diversity is a fantastic thing.

This week, we had yet another wonderful music lesson. We started the lesson playing the game 'What's that sound?' Before being introduced to a new exciting game 'High or low'. To play this game, we had to listen very carefully to two notes on the glockenspiel and either jump up high for the high note or sit down for the low note. To end our lesson, we learned more of the song 'When Goldilocks went to the house of the bears'. What talented musicians we have!

In maths, we have been learning how to count in 10s and 1s, to and from 2-digit numbers and how to use a place value grid to show the value of digits within a 1- or 2-digit number.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
