Year 2 w/b 20th September

Date: 23rd Sep 2022 @ 5:46pm

We have had another great week of learning in Year 2.

In English this week we have been planning our own finding narratives after reading ‘The Bog Baby’. To demonstrate our skills of innovation, we have planned stories with our own: magical creature, characters, exciting setting, problem and solution. These stories look like they are going to be wonderful, and I am really looking forward to reading them after a week of writing next week.

Our Bog Baby learning continued in Forest School, where children looked for different habits that creatures live in by looking for evidence such as footprints. After this, they made their own fantastic habitats for The Bog Baby. I am sure the Bog Baby will be very grateful for this!

In geography, we continued to look at different types of maps. This week, we used our maps to walk around our school grounds to look out for different key features such as Forest School and the pond. After this, we filled in a blank map and created a key so that we knew what each symbol represented. We are looking forward to drawing our own maps of the local area next week! In science, we have been describing animals and their offspring. Firstly, we were given pictures of a baby, toddler, child, teenager and adult and placed these in order of the stages of life before discussing the similarities and differences between them. Afterwards, we looked at matching pictures of animals to their young and noticed that some animals look nothing like their offspring!

In PSHE this week, we explored what is meant by ‘diversity’ and read the book ‘The Great Big Book of Families’. We then created a list of the many ways the UK is so great at being diverse, for example we have different religions, different families and different genders. Finally, we discussed what it would be like if everybody was the same and concluded that diversity is a fantastic thing.

We have had another wonderful week of PE where we continued with our gymnastics sessions. In this lesson, we practised forwards rolls and pyramid balances. Children are so excited to start practising their very own gymnastics routine next week!

In maths, we have continued to look at our Power Maths unit, ‘Numbers to 100.’ We looked at comparing numbers using the ‘greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ symbols and vocabulary and we also focussed on portioning numbers up to 100 using part whole models.

Today, the children were very excited for Mrs Taylor to teach DT. Children have designed and planned their puppets and looked at how to join different fabrics together. They have practised using a needle and thread and look forward to creating a running stitch next week in preparation for making their hand puppets.

Thank you for your continued support; it is so great to see that the children have been reading so much at home and have enjoyed completing their homework. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask via email, Dojo or through a note in reading diaries.

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.
