Year 2 w/b 22nd April

Date: 26th Apr 2024 @ 4:11pm

We have had another fantastic week of learning in Year Two.

We have been particularly busy in our English lessons this week, starting with planning our narratives, taking time to discuss the events of our stories and finding pictures particularly useful to record this chronological sequence.Towards the end of our week, we started to write our banning narratives and we look forward to finishing these next week. It was an eye-opening experience to discover what each child had chosen to ban!

Our spelling rule this week has been once again adding the suffix -ed. We learnt that if a word ends with a ‘y’, we must swap it for an ‘i’ before adding the suffix -ed. This rule applies for words such as tried, multiplied and copied. Our second spelling rule was adding the suffix -ness. This rule applies for words such as kindness, sadness and lateness.

In maths this week, we have continued with our unit on ‘Fractions’. We have been focusing on:

  • Identifying equal parts of a whole in different contexts including shape, quantity, volume and money.
  • Identifying which objects have been split into two equal parts and looking at ½ as a written fraction with a numerator and denominator.
  • Finding one half of different amount of objects, shapes and numbers.

In science this week, we have been looking at a new habitat, the pond. We have been looking at a variety of creatures that live in and around ponds, for example moorhens, mallard ducks, frogs and toads. We have learned that some only appear at busier times of the year, between May and August. As a class, we thought about how ducks live both on water and on land but we were very curious as to how they keep warm when they don’t have a towel to dry themselves, so we decided to do an experiment to find out more. We started our experiment by cutting out two paper feathers and colouring one of the feathers both sides with wax crayon. After this, we carefully used a pipette to drop water onto both feathers and watched to see what would happen next. We soon noticed that the water sat on top of the feather coated with wax, however the water was completed absorbed by the paper without wax. We were surprised to discover that ducks collect oil from a gland near their tails and then preen themselves with their beaks to rub the oil all over their feathers. The oil repels water so the inner feathers stay warm and dry.

In history this week, we were introduced to the Great Fire of Nantwich in preparation for our trip on the 8th May. We also investigated the factors that helped the fires to last for so long and spread so quickly, for example, the houses were made from wood and straw, they only had buckets of water to put out the fires and they pulled down the houses too late. We are all looking forward to our trip to Nantwich museum to learn even more about the Great Fire of Nantwich.

In RE this week, we designed our own churches which included: the pulpit, pews, the altar, an organ, a bell tower, a font, candles, a cross, stained glass windows and the lectern.

In DT this week, we experimented with different linkage systems. We used a variety of: thicknesses of card/paper; lengths of the strips; and width of the strips. We found that short, wide and thick strips worked the best. It was also a good opportunity to safely make levers and linkages – creating holes using a pencil and blu tack before inserting the split pins.

On Wednesday, we sadly said goodbye to the wonderful Mrs Pulle. We are so thankful for all she has done for Brereton and we will all miss her so much. We wish Mrs Pulle all the best with her move to Devon.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
