Year 2 w/b 5th February

Date: 9th Feb 2024 @ 4:42pm

We have had another great week of learning in Year 2.

In English on Monday, we found a picture of a man offering some beans to Jack. As a class, we imagined the sights, sounds, smells and feelings that Jack would have experienced during this scene. We then generated a list of adjectives, nouns, verbs and adverbs to describe Jack’s senses of when he was under the bridge, for example ‘Jack can see broken boxes leaning messily.’ On Tuesday, we enjoyed a vocabulary lesson, focusing on words from our book such as boomed, bone shaking, glum, wafted, confessed and hollered. After some whole class discussions and collaborative use of dictionaries and thesauri, the children were able to confidently define this new vocabulary. They even used these words in sentences to further demonstrate their understanding. On Thursday, we looked at our model text of a setting description and thought of ways that we could improve it, for example, by using exciting adjectives, alliteration and similes. On Friday, we read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘Jack and the Baked Beanstalk’ and thought about similarities and differences between the two stories using a Venn diagram.

One of our spelling rules this week has been adding the suffix ‘ly’. We now know that for words that end with a ‘y’ e.g. ‘happy’, we need to swap the ‘y’ for an ‘i’ before adding ‘ly’ e.g. ‘happily’. Another spelling rule we have focused on is adding the suffix ‘ed’. This rule applies for words such as chipped, dropped and jumped.

In maths this week, we have been focusing on:

  • Learning the 2 times-table in a number of contexts
  • Relating multiplication facts from the 2 times-table to dividing by 2. Children looked at how many ‘groups of 2’ there were.
  • Developing an understanding of how doubling and halving relate to multiplication and division by 2
  • Understanding the difference between odd and even. We could tell if a number was odd or even by grouping it in 2s.

On Tuesday, it was Safer Internet Day. We started our day by thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of the technology we use. We then met Mo and Jaz, who were enjoying playing a game called ‘Hatch me’, however, they soon felt worried and anxious when they pressed something on their game that that shouldn't have. They were tricked by a stranger into giving away one of their animals that they had won. We all agreed that we should always tell a trusted adult if we are worried about something we see online. Finally, we learned how to report and block people on a game.

This week it has been ‘Mental Health’ week and the theme has been ‘My Voice Matters’. We enjoyed an assembly held by the wellbeing council and afterwards, we thought about our proud moments in school and outside of school.

In science, we have been discussing whether we think a bulb would grow quicker in the sunlight on a window ledge or in the dark in the cupboard. As a class, we predicted that the bulb in the sunlight will have the best chance to grow. On Wednesday, the children were delighted to place their bulbs in water. We will make sure to keep an eye on our bulbs and to observe how they grow over the next few weeks.

In geography this week, we have been looking at similarities and differences between food that is grown in the UK compared to food grown in Jamaica. After some research, we were interested to find out that bananas are grown all year in Jamaica because they have a tropical climate.

I hope that you all have a lovely weekend.
