Year 3 w.b: 22.4.24

Date: 26th Apr 2024 @ 3:34pm

Yet another great week of learning in Year 3!

In Maths, we began by practising our multiplication and division knowledge.  We then commenced our new unit of adding fractions.  We found out that if you're dealing with two different fractions that have the same denominator, it's easy to learn how to add them together. You just need to add the numerators and keep the denominator the same. Then, simplify the fraction if necessary. To add fractions with different denominators, such as 1/2 and 1/3, you need to find a common denominator. The least common multiple of 2 and 3 is 6, so you can rewrite the fractions as 3/6 and 2/6, respectively. This allows you to add the numerators together, resulting in a sum of 5/6.

In English, we began to write a setting description for the Iron Man.  A story setting is where and when our story takes place.  Adjectives are describing words and we used them to describe where and when our story took place. We discovered that the season or weather can have a big impact on our story and we should use all of our senses to describe our setting.

In History, we learnt that by AD410 the city of Rome was under attack and the empire was falling apart so the Romans had to leave Britain to help back home.  After they left, many of the Roman towns in Britain crumbled away as people went back to living in the countryside but even after they were gone, the Romans left their mark all over the country.  We were amazed to find out they gave us: new towns, plants, animals, a new religion and new ways of reading and counting.  Even the word Britain comes from the Romans.

In Forest School, we learnt all about Roman weapons which were diverse, gruesome, and effective in helping soldiers dominate their enemies in battle. There were many different weapons that the Roman soldiers used.  One of the items was the dagger, which was also called the pugio.  The sword of the gladius was very powerful.  The Roman soldiers also carried a spear, or a javelin called a hasta, and many of them were archers and carried bows and arrows.  Mr Simmons showed us how to make a bow and arrow to play imaginative games, practise target shooting and improve our gross motor skills…it was such fun!

In Computing, we watched a book trailer called ‘The Dark- Book’ trailer and then we thought about the purpose of the video (to entice people to read the book).  We then watched another book trailer ‘It's a Book’ - Book trailer and discussed what made them different in terms of audience and purpose.  Finally, we began to focus on our own projects, to be creative and use technology to make a trailer to get someone interested in a story.  Rather than focusing too much on the story itself our aim was to hint at what it’s like, without giving too much away.

In Science, we learnt about our skeletons and muscles.  We discovered that underneath our skin are lots of things that make up our body. Two of these are bones and muscles. Bones shape our body and help us to stand up straight. Muscles are attached to bones; they help us walk and run and smile.  All the bones in our body make up our skeleton – from the top of our skull to the tips of the phalanges at the end of our toes. Muscles stretch across our bones and are attached with tendons. We use both our muscles and our skeleton to stand, write and even turn the pages when we’re reading a book.  We then made our own moving hand using card for the flesh, straws for the bones and string for the muscles. As we pulled the string, it worked like contracting muscles to pull the phalanges, making the fingers move.

In PE, we warmed up by finding a space and then moved around like gymnasts, we skipped, leapt and jumped with pointed toes and then performed either a straight jump, star jump, tuck jump, quarter turn, half turn, full turn or created a shape with our bodies.  We then collaborated to create a little sequence of moves to show everybody.

Next week is week 2 of our new lunch menu:

Monday is either cheese and tomato pizza or breaded fish.

Tuesday is either cheese or tuna baguette or ravioli.

Wednesday is either roast chicken/quorn or pasta parma rosa.

Thursday is either hunters chicken or cheese/ham sandwich.

Friday is either quorn enchiladas or jacket potato.

All served with a choice of side and a fresh side salad.
