Year 5 WC 17th March 2024

Date: 22nd Mar 2024 @ 4:28pm

We have had such an exciting week in Year 5 and have so many amazing memories to share. Some of the children have written a blog about our time at the Conway Centre:

Day 1

On the way to Conway, we watched a DVD up on the small tv at the front of the coach and arrived after two hours.

After we had disebarked and dragged our luggage to the social room, we had an induction where Leo went through all the safety rules. Then we went to the rooms, helped each other to make our beds and started to unpack.  Then we went to complete problem solving activities.  These were quite tricky but lots of fun!

We were put into 3 groups with Mrs Field, Mrs Taylor and Mr Cotton. There were 9 different problems such as moving a gold ball from one end to another using plastic guttering. There was one where we had to get a golf ball from the bottom of a tube to the top by filling it with water. However there were holes in it so the water kept coming out and we all got very wet!  After we did that we went on a long, muddy walk through a sheep field and through the woods.  While we were walking through the sheep field, Mr Cotton named one Mint Sauce. In the woods, we saw a strange rhubarb which Mr Cotton found out was called Chilian rhubarb.

After tea, we walked to the nightline which was a rope through the woods. There were lots of obstacles (like a cargo net) we had to crawl under, logs to climb over and a giant wet pillow to clamber over- all while blindfolded!  It was very muddy but also lots of fun!

We walked back and took all of our muddy shoes off and every one went to take a shower in the shower rooms. Then everyone got their pjs on and we went to the social room to watch Harry Potter.  After a bit we all went to our rooms and went to sleep.

Day 2

The next day we woke up and we went down to breakfast and the choices were sausage, egg and beans or bagel. Our first activity was art - making a space environment. We all gathered round the art teacher and she showed us how to fold and cut our background. Then we made the base for our planets to hang. We used tissue paper and PVA glue to make the different planets. Then we had our lunch.

After lunch we did batik. This is where you use hot, melted wax and a teapot like tool called a chanting tool. Then you get a piece of A4 paper, fold it into quarters and use it to catch drops off of the chanting tool and to see if it works before you use it. Then we put wax on the outline of the pen and painted ink between the wax. We made some wonderful artwork based on Christian symbols. For tea we had either fish and chips or chicken curry. In the evening, we sat around the campfire toasting marshmallows and singing some of our favourite Singfest songs.

Day 3

This morning we took part in a drama workshop. We played lots of games using our voices, facial expressions, body language, listening skills and communication. Then the teacher, Kerry, gave us different scenes to create a freeze frame in our groups which we then brought to life with interactions and movement.

As you can see from the blog and the photographs, the children have had lots of fun and have made lots of wonderful memories. They have embraced all the activities, learning valuable lessons about teamwork and responsibility. We are very proud of them all.

Next week, we have another busy week with our DT project making motorised doodlers, Easter service and a performance of The Selfish Giant. We are also looking forward to seeing you at parent consultations on Wednesday. If you haven't yet made an appointment, please get in touch on Dojo.
