Year 2 w/b 6th September

Date: 9th Sep 2022 @ 5:42pm

What a wonderful first week we have had in Year Two! On Tuesday, we first enjoyed sharing news from the summer holiday. It was a pleasure to hear all about the wonderful time that the children have shared with their families. We then became detectives to complete a classroom scavenger hunt.

We started the week in Collective Worship, learning about how and why Jesus taught his disciples the Lord’s prayer, we discussed each line and what it means. After this, in class we had a go at blowing bubbles after saying our own prayer. This is because when we say ‘Amen’ our prayer disappears, a little bit like bubbles.

For our first piece of writing, we have each written a letter to Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Pulle, thanking them for being such fantastic Year One teachers. The children have written about their favourite memories from Year One, shared news from their summer holidays, and have suggested some top tips for the new Year One class.

Later in the week we had an unusual discovery: some tiny, muddy footprints leading across our tables and up our windows. We noticed that the footprints led to our pond area, where we found some unusual signs. One was pointing to ‘Bluebell Wood’ and another read ‘Do not enter unless you can keep a secret…’. We made some predictions about the creature who may have left these footprints, using ‘because’ to explain our thinking. We then received a description of the creature. We used our inference skills to draw a picture of what we thought the creature may look like, based on this description. The next day, the creature was finally revealed. It was a…Bog Baby! After this, we explored some of the new vocabulary in the story and used a dictionary to find definitions. This linked to our Forest School session where we have had a fantastic time looking at different habitats.

In our maths lesson we launched an exciting new game called Numbot (play.numbots.com) for maths learning at home. Numbots is all about every child achieving the “triple win” of understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction. Every child in Year Two has been given a username, password and a letter of explanation. It is great to see that so many children have already had lots of fun using Numbots!

This half term we are working with MultiFlex to support our PE lessons. In PE this week we looked at different types of jumps (tuck, pike and straddle) and rolls (dish and pencil) to learn how to be super gymnasts. Later that afternoon we had our first Geography lesson where we revisited compass directions whilst looking at different types of maps. After this, children created an obstacle course on their maps and their partner used directional language to find the treasure. In PSHE we have used resources from the British Red Cross to learn about risks, hazards and dangers. We spotted different hazards around a garden and listed how we could make the garden safe. Finally, we have all come together today to reflect on the life of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. We talked about the important values she followed, such as compassion, service and respect and later wrote some short messages about what the Queen meant to us.

Have a lovely weekend! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask via email, Dojo or through a note in reading diaries.
