Thank you to Year 4 for a wonderful start back to school. What a lovely class they are! We have settled in well, getting used to our new routines.

Our week began with a DT challenge- how to build a 2D or 3D horse. We looked at materials needed, how to strengthen them and then how to attach them to create the 3D effect. This was great fun and a lovely way to get to know the children. Plenty of photos will be available; I’m just waiting for all the website consent permissions to come through and then I’ll add them to this blog.

In Maths over the last few days, we have begun our timetables work- a key feature in Year 4. We began by looking at what makes a multiple of 2, how to count in 2s and what this looks like. Then, we made a jigsaw of the written calculations and popped it in an envelope to bring home. Why not have a play with this over the weekend? Also introduced were the many websites that can support learning. The children loved the idea of these:

We have had two writing projects this week. The first was called “How I got my Gold Star”. This involved the children imagining and then writing the wonderful end of year 4 report they are going to get and what would be in it. They then published it and stuck a sparkling gold star on to show their future success. They all wrote how wonderfully they had done in English and Maths, how hard they had worked but also how kind they had been to their friends and how they had put a smile on people’s faces. Their self-belief showed clearly through their writing which was lovely to read. Our school values shone brightly. I explained to the children that what they had just done was write about what to focus on to have a really successful year in all areas of school life. It will be lovely to return to these at the end of the year.

Our other writing task was a free creative write. With pictures to inspire, the children could write whatever they wanted- a diary, a story, a fact file. I am looking forward to reading these over the weekend.

Once again, thank you very much for a great start and I, Miss Gadsby and Mrs Marshfield are looking forward to a wonderful year together.

Wishing you a peaceful weekend,

Miss Porteous (Mrs Tice’s new name!)
