Week ending 24th November
Date: 24th Nov 2017 @ 11:51am
In English this week we have been doing a lot of writing and there is some great progress to be seen. We have been searching out new vocabulary over the last few weeks, so words like diminutive, permeating, lugubrious and inexorable are starting to make regular appearances - and in the correct context. We have also completed our recount about what it was like in a Victorian school, this now needs writing out for display and for topic books. Again, a very good piece of writing.
In maths we have now come to the end of our statistics unit, having learnt a lot about line graphs, 2 way tables and timetables. Telling the time has been an issue for some of the children so any extra input from home or from tutors would be great - we have looked at telling the time using analogue, digital and 24 hour clock. Next week we are working on multiples, factors, common factors, tests of divisibility, prime numbers, square numbers and cubed numbers. Year 5 are a little bit behind where we should be at the moment (we have paused to input things that they had forgotten - multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000, telling the time) so I intend to try and cover a couple of things from the above list during an afternoon session or two as well. Knowledge of times tables is crucial to success in next weeks work (and all aspects of maths) so I will be sending home some extra things to do to refresh their knowledge.
In science, we are nearing the end of our Properties of Materials topic - Miss Eardley has been teaching this this week. The children have really enjoyed it. We will make a start on our next topic of Forces in Action before Christmas.
Enjoy the Christmas Fair tonight!
