Year 1 w/b 23rd September 2024
Date: 27th Sep 2024 @ 4:40pm
We have had a great week of learning in Year One!
Our work in English has now moved onto instruction writing. We had to come up with a cunning way to stop the toy soldiers from playing all night and keeping us awake. Luckily, we found some old floorboards, a brown sheet and a tasty sweet. The soldiers were so tempted by the tasty sweet they walked onto the brown paper covering the gap in the floorboards and fell between them (still chatting). At last, we had some peace and quiet! We learnt the actions for some instructions like first, next, after that and in the end and rehearsed saying the instructions together. We looked at the different parts of the instructions – the title, what we need and what we do. We are looking forward to writing our innovations next week.
In maths this week, we have been focusing on the following:
- Counting backwards within 10.
- Learning that 1 less is the number before. We have been using our counting skills and a number track to help us.
- Matching one object with another to compare groups (one-to-one correspondence).
In phonics we have reviewed either ay and ee or ou and oy writing words with these sounds in sentences and adding the suffixes -ing and -ed where appropriate. Monday’s spelling homework therefore will reflect this teaching and gives the children a further opportunity to embed their learning with you at home. Thank you again for your support encouraging your child to practise these at home and to use them in sentences with the common exception words of the week.
In PE, we continued with our unit gymnastics. The children had remembered all the different shapes they made last week from pike, to straight, arch and dish and used this knowledge to add to jumping. We learned to perform straight jumps and star jumps, pointing our toes when jumping and landing safely on two feet with soft knees. Finally, we performed jumps from the end of a bench onto the blue mats.
In science this week, we went on outside to search for different leaves and worked as a team to decide which tree they belonged to.
Within RE, our discussions around why some harvests fail in other countries inspired us to consider how we can help people across the world. The children had lots of ideas such as praying for neighbours in need and sharing what we have with others.
In art and design, we have continued our work based on William Morris’ work. We created our own picture using wavy, zigzag and straight lines.
On Thursday 3rd October at 9:30am, we will be holding a short Harvest Service for Parents and Carers of children in EYFS and Years 1 and 2 at St Oswald’s Church. The children will be singing some harvest songs and each class will read a prayer. We look forward to seeing you there!
I hope you all have a great weekend.
