Year 1 w/b 24th June 2024
Date: 28th Jun 2024 @ 3:54pm
What a fun, busy and sunny week we have enjoyed in Year One.
In English the children have been writing letters to their new Year 2 teacher. They had to first create a plan for their letter including important details such as the address, who it is addressed to, who it is from etc. The children have done lots of letter work so this was great for them to apply their knowledge and skills learnt. We then published the letters ready for Mrs Forrester to take a look. Our final pirate themed work for the half term will be centred around poetry including performing poetry and creating our own. This week we have learnt a poem written by Mrs Pulle. Here is the poem if your child would like to continue working on learning it at home:
My Auntie was a pirate.
My Auntie was a pirate.
At least that’s what she said.
She says it was a while ago.
When her hair was thick and red.
Her ship was called ‘The Fortune’
With guns thirty and three.
Her crew were all hardworking.
Inspiring both you and me.
The ship’s cat was a panther.
Black as the darkest night.
Her parrot was called Lucky
Whose screech was such a fright.
She has a love of all things gold.
Bracelets, earrings, coins and rings.
In her glittering treasure box
Pearl necklaces on strings.
My Auntie was a pirate.
Who sailed the deepest sea.
But now she’s just my Auntie.
Who’s as friendly as can be.

In Phonics the children have been adding the suffix -est, -ing to words such as push/pushing, talk/talking. The children have also been looking at plurals - adding s/es to words using the following rule: if the word ends with sh, ch, s, x z use es to make it a plural.
In Maths this week the children have been focusing on time focusing specifically on half past the hour. Please continue to talk about this at home as it is a lifelong skill they will need.
In Collective Worship this week we have been looking at the ‘wow’ moments in life that can take our breath away such as going on holiday and looking at the view, scoring a goal for our football team etc. The children then went back into class to complete a reflection activity where they had to make some bunting to hang in the class with their favourite wow moment. They had some lovely ideas such as ‘when my mummy and daddy got married’, ‘when I went to Disney land’.
In science the children went on a tree hunt around the school grounds. It was amazing to spot so many deciduous and evergreen trees. The children then went back to class and had to sort the leaves. Great observational work Year 1.
In PE this week the children practiced some underarm throwing. They had lots of throwing and catching games to help them develop their underarm throwing skills. The children then played a caterpillar game where they had to hit the three balls and then run around like a caterpillar in their team. The children worked really effectively as a team.
In RE this week the children have been learning about part 3 of the story of Joseph focusing on Joseph the Ruler. They watched a clip of the story and we read the Bible story. The children had some wonder questions in their RE portfolios to think about and explore such as ‘how did the brothers feel?’, ‘what are your hopes and dreams?’.
In music we have wrapped up our unit of work by creating group music compositions around the theme of blasting off to the mood. We performed with confidence and joy before welcoming feedback from others in the class with a focus on the tempo, pulse and composition of the music.
In geography we have also reviewed our learning so far for this half term and used our geographical skills to compare two beaches. We looked at the human and physical features and compared these between the two locations.
Have a well-rested weekend and enjoy this lovely sunny weather.
