Year 1 w/b 6th January 2025

Date: 10th Jan 2025 @ 11:53am

Happy New Year! It has been wonderful to welcome the children back to the start of a very chilly but exciting Spring term.

An exciting package containing a little note, pencil, binoculars, a magnifying glass, some chunks of cheese and a tiny brown bag all stored within a cheese wrapper introduced us to our new book Hermelin by Mini Grey. All these items belonged to a detective mouse.  We asked lots of questions about why Hermelin acted with such hope, compassion and respect for others before we wrote our own questions. We also learnt about plurals adding s/es to words, how the prefix un changes the meaning of words and how adjectives add colour to descriptions.

In phonics this week, we have focused on the sounds are (care and share) and ur (nurse with a purse).

In maths this week, we have continued with our unit ‘Place Value (within 20)’. We have been focusing on the following:

  • Exploring 17, 18 and 19 shown on ten frames, expressing them as 1 ten and a number of ones. We focused on the “10-and-a bit” structure to help us subitise.
  • Using a variety of practical equipment to show that 2 tens are equivalent to 20. We have spent time looking at 20 in different ways, particularly ways where each ten can be fixed or broken apart, for example bundles of straws.
  • Applying our counting skills to find 1 more and 1 less than any number within 20.
  • Using a number line to 20.

Design technology saw us naming and classifying fruit and vegetables and several of us were rather surprised to discover peppers, tomatoes and peas are fruit as they contain seeds.

In music, we played 'What's that sound?' using a variety of percussion instruments and made up a class song called 'What do we see on the way to school? based off the song 'Here we go round the mulberry bush'.

In geography, we have introduced our new topic that looks at farming. We have recognised that there are different types of farms. We categorised farms into three main types: arable, livestock and dairy. We already have some farm experts in the class who were keen to share their knowledge. This is set to be an exciting unit of work.

In science this week, we put our detective hats on and used our sense of smell to predict what spices we thought were inside the jars. We were very excited that many of our predictions were correct!

In PE, we started our new unit football. We focused on dribbling and keeping control of the ball using the sole of our foot. The children played some fun activities, working as a team whilst developing their listening skills. Increasing their confidence and skills when controlling the ball and stopping it immediately when hearing the signal was important.

I hope you have all stayed safe today in this very cold weather (and managed to have some fun in the snow!)

I look forward to seeing everybody back in school on Monday. I hope you have a great weekend!
