Year 2 w/b 21st October 2024

Date: 24th Oct 2024 @ 4:15pm

It’s the last week before we break for half term, but the learning hasn’t slowed down.

In our collective worship this week, the children held the worship. Our class wrote an acrostic poem all about what Community means to them in our school. The children read their words out beautifully and confidently and the whole class sang the very catchy song ‘Shine’.

RE  - Why is the Bible such a special book?

We reflected back on all of our learning in the RE lessons from this half term and completed our Learning Maps. There have been stories from the old and new testament, why Christians think the Bible is their most prized possession, where we might find a Bible and stories of finding ancient scrolls from the Bible in a cave and just how far Mary had to walk to get her own version of the bible in her language, Welsh. We also looked at the similarities and differences of different religions holy books.

No-Outsiders – The Great Big Book of Families by Mary Hoffman and Ros Asquith

To understand what diversity is.

We discussed the meaning of diversity – meaning that everyone is different. We enjoyed listening to the book and discussing ways that we celebrate diversity in our school and in our country. We also thought about families and how diverse each of our own individual families are.

English

This week we have focussed on shape poems, we thought about all of the language we would like to use: noun phrases, alliteration and similes for effect. The children worked in small groups to gather ideas then individually wrote their own poem about a river. The last part was to publish it onto a river shaped template. They then proudly performed them to the rest of the class.

Maths

In Maths we have been learning new strategies to support addition both within and crossing ten. We learnt a new informal written method to make addition easier when adding across ten (when the ones add to a greater number than ten). For this we first add the ones above the number sentence (ones float) and then add the tens below the number sentence (tens sink) then adding the tens and ones is a simpler task. For example when adding 36 + 27 = we would add 6 ones and 7 ones to give us 13 ones, then add 3 tens (30) and 2 tens (20) to give us 5 tens (50). Finally adding 50 and 13 is a simpler task as the ones no longer cross 10 and we have the answer to our number sentence 36 + 27 = 63.

Geography

We brought our learning to a close by re-capping all of the vocabular and skills we have learnt this half term. We discussed all of the features of a map we have learnt; key, compass rose, directions, birds eye-view, perspective, human features and natural features. Then the children had fun d4esigning a map of their dream bedrooms.

DT

We hope you enjoy the hand puppets. It would be wonderful to see evidence of them being used in play at home if you are able to send in photos.

This week, children have come home with login details for Timetable Rock Stars to support learning in school. We will be introducing multiplication next half term with a focus on the 2x, 5x and 10x tables but if you would like to become familiar with the website, login details are in the front of reading diaries.

Many apologies for the lack of blog last week – it seems it did not go live. You can now find it with some wonderful pictures of the children from their learning last week.

We hope you have a wonderful and fun filled week away from school and look forward to seeing you on Monday 4th November.
