Year 2 w/b 29th April

Date: 3rd May 2024 @ 3:44pm

We have had another great week of learning in Year Two! We have been busy in our English lessons this week as we have been writing our banning narratives. It was particularly interesting to read what each child had decided to ban. What fantastic authors they are!

Our first spelling rule this week has once again involved adding the suffix ‘ed’. This week, we learnt to ‘drop the e before adding ed’ (e.g. ‘like’ becomes ‘liked’ and ‘tickle’ becomes ‘tickled’). We also revised our two other rules for adding ‘ed’: doubling the final consonant before adding ed (e.g. ‘hug’ becomes ‘hugged’) and swapping the y for an i before adding ed (e.g. ‘try’ becomes ‘tried’). Our second spelling rule has been ‘adding the suffix -ness’. We learnt that we should swap the y for an i before adding -ness. This rule applies for words such as dizziness, sleepiness and bossiness.

In maths this week, we have been focusing on:

  • Recognising shapes that have been split into four equal parts and identifying one quarter.
  • Finding one quarter of different amounts by sharing them into four equal groups.
  • Thirds as three equal parts of one whole.
  • Non-unit fractions (fractions in which the numerator is not 1).

In history, we were introduced to the Great Fire of Nantwich in preparation for our trip next Wednesday. We also investigated the factors that helped the fires to last for so long and spread so quickly.

In Spanish, we recapped numbers to 5 and greetings before moving onto learning about four jungle animals and what they do. The children practised reading and saying el elefante, el leon, el mono and el leopard.

We really enjoyed our PE lesson with Mr McAulay on Monday! We warmed up with a communication game where we moved in different ways and had to get into pairs, 3s and 4s. We then played some other fun games that involved running and being active before moving onto our 6 athletics stations: relays, obstacle courses, throwing javelins and bean bags accurately at distance and jumping from standing.

In RE this week, we learnt that people of Jewish faith meet together for worship in a synagogue and there are two main branches of Judaism – orthodox and reform. We found out that the Ark is the most holy place in the synagogue as it contains the Sefer Torah and is the focal point of prayer.

In computing this week, we enjoyed navigating our way round the digital International Space Station (ISS) with our partners. We then labelled our maps with exciting features that we discovered that make life possible in space. We were interested to learn that astronauts sleep in small sleeping compartments and sleeping bags and they strap their bodies loosely so that their bodies will not float around while they sleep.

In DT this week, we started to design our moving monster heads and decided which linkage system would work best.  We also asked our friends to vote for their favourite design, focusing on colour, pattern and overall plan.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
