Year 2 w/b 9th September 2024
Date: 13th Sep 2024 @ 4:11pm
We have had a fantastic first full week in Year Two and are so proud of how well each and every one of the children has settled into the new year. There may well be some tired children this weekend as they settle back into school life.
In our collective worship we thought about how it feels if other people do no follow the rules and how that makes us feel. We then went on to think about our school rule; Ready, Respectful, Safe and how following these rules can make for a peaceful and happy school for everyone. Year Two have been fantastic at following these rules to support our school and class community. We are so proud of them all.
RE
Why is the Bible such a special book? Year Two have enjoyed discussing their favourite books and giving reasons as to why they are their favourite books. We then looked at the Bible and discussed why it is a holy book, who may use it and why. We looked at various publications of the Bible and discussed why it is translated into many different languages making it the biggest selling book in the whole world.
English
We are using the text ‘A River’ by Marc Martin to inspire our writing this week. The pupils have used noun phrases to write a list poem, immersed themselves in the beautiful illustrations and taken time to explore the definitions of words and phrases to understand how they make us feel when we read the story.
Maths
In Maths this week we have been looking at partitioning numbers within 100. This has included partitioning into tens and ones e.g. 73 as 70 and 3 (seven tens and three ones) and also flexibly partitioning numbers in different ways e.g. 72 as 60 and 13. In Year Two there is a focus on writing numbers to 100 in words. Supporting with this at home would be very helpful. Thank you to all of you for supporting with the first week of Maths homework in the Maths Journals that came home on Monday. These are to be returned each Monday and will be marked and sent back out.
PSHE
We are learning about what makes an ideal classroom. The children eagerly discussed what actions they could do that would contribute positively to the life of our classroom, then wrote and undertook pledges based on these actions.
Geography
The children are learning what a map is and why they are useful. We discussed we use them for, what they show and where do we find map them (Globes, atlas, play mats, treasure map, story maps, SatNav, theme parks, transport maps, Google Maps etc...) The children were also introduced to a compass rose and the language used when describing direction.
DT
This half term we will be building on our puppet making skills from Year One. Last year we looked at fabric joining methods including gluing, stapling and using safety pins. This year we will build on this to develop our sewing skills and will join the fabric using a simple running stitch.
Science
Our topic for this half term is animals including humans and we have started off by looking at the needs of animals. We started by thinking about the things that make us happy and found out from the amount of post-it notes used that there are many things that make our class happy but did we need all of there things? We then tried to separate these into needs and wants. We decided that to main needs of all animals are air, water and food but that there are other things that will certainly keep us healthy such as love and exercise. We will continue to build on this next week.
PE
Our focus in PE for this half term is gymnastics and this week we focused on moving like a gymnast. We have been performing shapes when moving on apparatus with a strong body, control and pointed toes.
As you will have seen, reading diaries and reading books came home this week. Please try to read each night. Reading each book at least three times will build fluency, pace and confidence. We will be reassessing reading levels over the coming weeks to ensure children are reading at an appropriate level.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,
Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Forrester
