Year 5 10th January 2022

Date: 10th Jan 2023 @ 4:06pm

Welcome back to a new school term! We have lots of exciting plans for this term so please look on our class page for the new topic web. Our theme for the next 6 weeks will be Space and we'll be learning about this in Science and also through our English text, Where Once We Stood. We're certain the children are really going to enjoy it.

In Maths we have been finishing off our unit on adding and subtracting fractions. We have been really impressed with how the children are tackling these lessons as there have been some rather challenging concepts but they have shown great determination and perseverance. This year we have also introduced some additional arithmetic lessons three times per week after lunch. This will give the children opportunity to consolidate our learning from the autumn term, increasing their confidence and accuracy in these calculations.

In English, we had a visit from 'Neil Armstrong' last week. The children interviewed our astronaut and asked him about what it was like to land on the moon. This prompted a discussion about whether humans should return to the moon or whether time and money would be better spent on other space exploration. This week we have been looking at punctuating speech and then adding description to dialogue to make it more interesting.

In Science, the children have been introduced to the planets. They have been using playdough to make models of the Solar System to help them to visualise the differences in sizes of the planets in relation to the Sun.

In history we have been looking at what how we know about the Shang Dynasty. We have learnt that they were a Bronze Age civilisation in China and that archaeologists use artefacts to learn about the past. This week we are learning about how the Shang Dynasty began and who the first ruler was.

In our My Happy Mind lesson we began our unit called 'Appreciate'. The children were excellent at identifying how we can show appreciation and were able to reflect on what they are grateful for. Often when we appreciate someone we focus on the outcome of their actions. Instead we considered these questions to help us to develop an even greater level of gratitude:

  • What was the person's intent when they took the action?
  • What was the cost to that person of taking the action?
  • What was the benefit I received as a result of them taking that action?

As always if you have any questions or queries, please pop us a message on Dojo or email [email protected]

Enjoy the rest of your week!
