Year 5 6th February
Date: 5th Feb 2017 @ 6:08pm
Year 5 have been incredibly busy over the last few weeks.
In English, we have been working on our text 'The Lost Happy Endings' which is a modern fairy tale. Children had fun exploring the clues in the forest and interviewing the witch. They innovated their own versions of the story and told it from the witch's point of view. They are now working on newspaper reports based on events from fairy tales. So far they have written lead paragraphs about: a handsome prince searching for the owner of a glass slipper, the destruction of 3 pig's homes and two children captured in the forest. This work will continue until the end of term with children having the opportunity to write their own modern fairytale and newspaper report. We are hoping to publish some of the work and add it to the website before half term.
In maths we have been working on decimals, multiplication and division. Many children are still finding times tables difficult as well as solving word problems. We are doing lots of work on this in school, but extra practice at home would also be beneficial.
We have started our new topic 'Mysteries of the East' and the children know all about the rise of Baghdad and 'The House of Wisdom'. This topic will continue until Easter,
In science we are learning about the 'Earth, moon and sun'. Children are enjoying the topic and I have booked a visit to Jodrell Bank to end the topic on 25th April. A letter will be coming home shortly.
This week, we have 'Safer Internet Day' on Tuesday. Children will be completing activities to help them understand how to stay safe online, We will add some of our work to the website, We will also be teaching sex and relationships education on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Children will be taught as single classes for part of the afternoon, but will also have the opportunity to work as single sex groups (Mr Collier will have the boys and I will have the girls). I know many of you took the opportunity to look at the materials we use on Friday, but if you do have any questions please pop in and ask.
I hope this information was useful,
Mrs Wood
