Year 5 WC 13th September 2021
Date: 19th Sep 2021 @ 5:33pm
We've had another great week in Year 5. In our history work the children have been very intrigued about life as a slave as we've been looking at historical sources such as newspaper clippings, adverts and pictures to tell us more about what it was like. We looked at adverts for slave auctions learning that it was both men and woman as well as children that were sold, and they were spoken about like objects rather than people. In the pictures we saw slaves being dressed in very little and they were shackled together. The children had some very interesting discussions about what they observed and learnt from these.
In Maths we are continuing with place value. This week we looked at rounding to the nearest 1000 and then moved onto Roman numerals. We learnt to read and write Roman numerals to numbers in the thousands as well as some problem solving. Next we're focusing on place value of numbers to one million. MyMaths homework this week will be consolidating everything we have learnt during our Place Value unit.
In English we have been learning about parenthesis in our spag work and how we use dashes, brackets and commas to show this. In our writing we have started our 'analyse' stage of the writing process. This is where we read and understand a model text, which in this unit is a diary entry. The children 'read as a writer' identifying key language features that we can use when we write our own. Next week we'll start planning our own using what we have learnt.
On Thursday we visited St Oswalds for our class service with Rev. Sandi where we learnt about Holy Communion. Sandi commented on the excellent behaviour of the children in church and they were a pleasure to take.
In PE this half term we are doing hockey. In our lessons we have been learning how to hold the hockey stick correctly and dribble the ball in different ways.
