Year 5 WC 24th June

Date: 30th Jun 2024 @ 9:24am

This week we started with our Young Leaders session where we discussed 'Does it matter if people say thank you?'. This sparked a very interesting debate among the class with some feeling very strongly that people should say thank you and show gratitude, because if they don't it leaves you feeling ignored and unappreciated: 'If people say thank you, it shows they care. Why should we carry on if they don't care?' However, most of the class agreed that we don't do something to get a 'thank you' or to get the credit, we do it because it's the right thing, therefore it shouldn't matter if people say thank you. We have also started to think about our community project which we'll be putting into action in the next few weeks.

In Maths we have been working on negative numbers, understanding how to place numbers on a number line, comparing negative numbers and finding the difference. We have also completed our end of year arithmetic assessment; the children worked very hard and did extremely well. Well done!

In English we have been writing our own survival narratives about an explorer who adventures into the unknown. They have chosen their own settings and then decided on a danger that the explorer will encounter. We'll be continuing with these next week.

On Wednesday, the children were visited by Sian from the Fire Department. She spent the afternoon informing us about the Green Cross Code, seatbelts and helmets. The children were very attentive and contributed well with key questions.

In Music, we began to look at how to construct a radio show. This includes being aware of the background music, the jingles as well as the script.

In RE, we continued our learning about the apostle, Paul. Paul believed his purpose was to preach and to convert Gentiles (people who were not Jewish) to Christianity. It's believed his greatest impact on Christian history comes from letters he wrote. His thoughts on Jesus, Jewish law, and the relationship between God and Jesus were the foundation for the development of Christianity. In the lesson, children designed posters to offer words of comfort for people in need and for our friends who may need words of encouragement from time to time.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
