Year 5 WC 27th September 2021
Date: 4th Oct 2021 @ 9:17am
Year 5 have really been enjoyed our Slavery topic over the last couple of weeks. We have learnt all about the Underground Railroad and how slaves used symbols sewn onto quilts to help them to escape. We used the book, 'The Patchwork Path: A quilt map to Freedom' to learn about two slaves who used a series of hidden clues to escape a life of slavery and made the dangerous journey to freedom. This story is inspiring our Design and Technology this half term as we are desiging and making our own class freedom quilt. We have started by learning and practising some different stitches, including a laced running stitch and a blanket stitch. Next we'll be designing our own patchwork quilts and using our skills to make our design.
In English we have used the book 'Unspoken' by Henry Cole which is a wordless picture book about a young farm girl who discovers a runaway slave hiding in the barn. We have been focusing on diary writing so far this half term so the children planned and wrote a diary retelling the story from the farm girl's point of view. Next we are starting our unit on biographies and we'll be using what we learn to write a biography about Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave who also helped around 300 more slaves to also find freedom.
In Maths we have started our unit on addition and subtraction. The children have demonstrated an excellent understanding so far of column addition and column subtraction, using their mathematical vocabulary to explain their method. Next we are moving on to developing our mental strategies and solving problems.
In PSHE we have been thinking about how we keep ourselves safe when watching television series and films. We learnt about the age restriction symbols and what these mean. After understanding how films are graded, we used the criteria to have a go at rating some different film trailers whether they should be U, PG or 12.
In Science we have learnt about friction. We carried out an investigation using Forcemeters to measure which surfaces had the most friction. Next we are learning about the force caused by air resistance.
Last week we completed our Computing unit about search engines. We learnt about what a search engine is; how to use key words to search for a chosen topic and how to check the validity of what we find. All work that we complete in Computing is added to Showbie. There is no further work to complete at home but you can see what we have been doing in class.
Yesterday Mrs Tice completed a marathon in 5 hours which is an amazing achievement! All money raised is going towards the school so if you would like to donate please click here.
