Year 5 WC 28th February 2022
Date: 6th Mar 2022 @ 3:12pm
We've had a wonderful start to our half term in Year 5. This week the children have been introduced to their new text, The Hound of the Baskervilles, a Sherlock Holmes novel. Following our hook lesson, the children made some interesting predictions and some children wrote descriptive opening paragraphs to the story. Then we have explored the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Sir Henry Baskerville in more detail using evidence from the text to support our inferences.
In Maths we are continuing with fractions. This week we have been understanding fractions as division with and interpreting remainders as fractions. We have also started to add and subtract fractions which we'll be continuing this week.
This week in Science we have started our new topic 'properties of materials'. In preparation for the unit, the children explored some new vocabulary and then they used their knowledge of different materials and their properties to apply them to everyda items around the classroom. Next week they'll be applying their knowledge when they carry out their investigative work.
In RE this half term, our unit is Salvation where our key question is 'What can we learn from Christian works of art about salvation?'. We began our topic with the children working together to complete a timeline of the events around leading to and following Jesus' crucifixion. The children also discussed what they already know about salvation and how this fit into the events of the Bible. Next week, we look forward to a visit from Rev Sandi to complete our previous topic where the children will have the opportunity to ask questions about how the church uses their talents to contribute to the local community.
This month we are very excited to be taking part in the 'F1 in Schools' project. Over the coming lessons the children will work as a team to research, design and make an F1 model car. As part of the project they will put together a presentation about what they have learnt and how they used this to build their car. This week we completed our research stage by finding out which features of an F1 car make it suitable for high speeds.
In Geography we have started our next topic, China, after learning about the Shang Dynasty in our history topic before half term. The children were able to identify where China was in the world using their knowledge of continents. We then looked more closely at the different regions in China, learning that they have provinces, municipalities, autonomous and special autonomous regions. After learning what a megacity is, the children were very surprised to learn just how heavily populated these cities are and we discussed whether we would want to live in these kinds of cities.
Finally, just a reminder that English homework is on Showbie and Maths on MyMaths every Monday and this is expected to be completed by the following the Monday. If you are having any problems with logging in, please let me know. We appreciate your support with homework as this helps to consolidate learning we have done in class.
Have a wonderful weekend.
